Sauvignon Blanc from Loire, France: Dom. de la Rossignole Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Sancerre 2008

Everything you could want in top-notch Sancerre with an added layer of rich white fruit (think poached pears and juicy green apples) that coats the palate before a wave of citrus energy washes over and sets up the taste buds for the next sip. Aromas of wildflowers and firecrackers are a nod to this third-generation Sancerre family's outstanding terroir; the finish reminds of fresh sea breezes, lime sorbet and an endless summer.

Pale yellow. Spicy citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, with notes of fennel and white pepper adding energy. Tightly wound, focused grapefruit and lemongrass flavors are deepened by a note of bitter pear skin. The finish is taut, linear and refreshingly tangy. Painfully young now and in need of aeration or another year of bottle age.
